The University of Rwanda (UR) has been named among five universities in Africa to receive the USD 3 million Africa Higher Education for Transformation (AHEFT) Prize, awarded by the Mastercard Foundation in recognition of its contribution to strengthening the health sector.
The University of Rwanda was recognized in the "Excellence in Health" category for its longstanding contribution to Rwanda's health system and the development of a skilled healthcare workforce.
The university has trained more than 26,000 health professionals, contributing to efforts to address the country's need for qualified healthcare workers.
The University of Rwanda said its impact extends beyond the classroom through a community-based training model that connects students with communities and real-world healthcare settings.
Through clinical placements, outreach programmes, and university health services, the institution's initiatives have reached nearly 500,000 people, contributing to healthcare delivery while providing students with practical experience.
The AHEFT Prize recognizes higher education institutions that demonstrate significant impact in transforming Africa's higher education landscape and addressing key development challenges.
The recognition highlights the University of Rwanda's role in supporting national development through education, research, community engagement, and professional training.
The award further underscores the importance of higher education institutions in building a skilled and resilient health workforce capable of responding to the healthcare needs of Rwanda and contributing to the country's broader development goals.
