Government pledges support after Musanze market fire
Rwanda’s government pledged on Sunday to help repair Musanze’s GOICO market so trading can resume after a fire damaged the premises on Saturday.
In a statement dated 11 October, the Ministry of Local Government expressed sympathy for traders, customers, workers and families affected by the blaze.
The ministry said authorities were investigating the cause and assured those affected that the government would support repairs to enable commercial activities to restart.
Two people sustained minor injuries, while 15 others experienced psychological distress and were taken to hospital. Most had been discharged, with two still receiving treatment when the statement was issued.
Northern Province Governor Maurice Mugabowagahunde separately put the preliminary value of destroyed goods at approximately Rwf30 billion. Assessments are continuing to establish the extent of the losses.
The ministry thanked police firefighters, local authorities and residents for their joint response. Their efforts focused on protecting lives and preventing flames from spreading to neighbouring commercial buildings.
Media reports suggest the fire began when welding sparks ignited clothing and mattresses on an upper floor. Authorities have yet to confirm the cause.
Built in 2017 at a cost of approximately Rwf7.5 billion, the five-storey complex housed clothing shops, electronics businesses, banks and other retailers.
